Eyelash extensions can make your daily beauty routine easier, but choosing the right appointment is important. One of the most common questions clients ask is whether they should book a lash fill or a completely new full set.
A lash fill is designed to maintain an existing set of eyelash extensions, while a full set creates a new look from the beginning. The right option depends on how many extensions remain, how much time has passed since your last appointment, and the overall condition of your lashes.

What Is a Lash Fill?
A lash fill is a maintenance appointment for an existing set of eyelash extensions.
During a fill, the lash artist evaluates the condition of the current extensions, removes extensions that have grown out, and applies new extensions to natural lashes that have grown in since the previous appointment. The goal is to restore fullness, improve symmetry, and refresh the overall appearance of the lash set.
Natural eyelashes grow and shed in cycles. As individual natural lashes fall out, the extensions attached to them fall out as well. This is completely normal and is the main reason regular maintenance appointments are needed.
A fill does not replace every extension. Instead, it works with the extensions that are still safely attached and adds new ones where necessary.
What Is a Full Set?
A full set is a complete eyelash extension application performed on clean natural lashes.
During this appointment, the lash artist creates the entire lash design from the beginning. The style may be Classic, Volume, or another customized look depending on the client’s natural lashes, eye shape, and desired result.
A full set is usually needed when:
- You are getting eyelash extensions for the first time.
- Most of your previous extensions have already fallen out.
- The remaining extensions are heavily grown out.
- You want to make a major change to the lash style.
- Your current set cannot be safely or evenly restored.
- Your previous extensions were applied by another lash artist.
A full set generally takes longer than a fill because the artist is creating the complete lash design rather than maintaining an existing one.
Lash Fill vs Full Set: The Main Difference
The main difference between a lash fill and a full set is the condition of the existing extensions.
A lash fill works when enough extensions remain evenly distributed across the lash line. The lash artist must have a stable foundation to restore the set without creating an uneven or overloaded result.
A full set is more appropriate when there are large gaps, very few extensions remain, or the current extensions are too grown out to maintain safely.
The amount of time since the previous appointment is helpful, but it is not the only factor. Two clients may return after the same number of weeks and have very different levels of retention.
Retention can be affected by:
- Natural lash growth cycles.
- Skin type.
- Home care.
- Makeup use.
- Lash cleansing habits.
- Sleeping position.
- Exposure to heat, steam, or oils.
- Picking or rubbing the lashes.
Because every client’s retention is different, the final decision may depend on an in-person assessment of the lash set.
When Can You Book a Lash Fill?
A lash fill may be appropriate when a reasonable amount of the original set remains and the extensions are still distributed evenly enough to rebuild the look.
Your lash set should also be clean and free from heavy makeup, mascara, oils, or adhesive buildup.
A fill appointment usually includes:
- Evaluating the remaining extensions.
- Removing extensions that are too grown out.
- Cleaning and preparing the natural lashes.
- Applying new extensions to available natural lashes.
- Restoring the shape and fullness of the set.
Booking regular fills can help keep the lashes looking polished without waiting until most of the extensions are gone.

When Do You Need a New Full Set?
You may need a new full set if too few extensions remain to complete a proper fill.
Large empty areas can make it difficult to restore the lash design evenly during a standard maintenance appointment. In that situation, a full set provides enough time to safely remove unsuitable extensions and create a balanced result from the beginning.
A full set may also be necessary when the remaining extensions are twisted, tangled, heavily grown out, or attached in a way that may affect the natural lashes.
Other situations that may require a new full set include:
Your lashes were done at another salon
At ICON Beauty Clinic, we generally do not perform fills over another artist’s eyelash extension work. Different lash artists may use different adhesives, techniques, curls, thicknesses, and application methods.
Working over an unknown set can make it difficult to guarantee a clean, consistent, and safe result. Removal of the previous extensions and application of a new full set may be recommended.
You wore mascara on the extensions
Mascara can collect around the adhesive bonds and may be difficult to remove completely. It can also cause extensions to stick together or become coated with residue.
Depending on the condition of the set, a full removal and new application may be more appropriate than a fill.
You want a completely different style
Small adjustments may sometimes be possible during a fill, but major changes usually require a new full set.
For example, changing from a very light Classic set to a much fuller Volume design may be easier to achieve with a fresh application.

Too much time has passed
When a client waits too long between appointments, many extensions may have already shed, while the remaining ones may be significantly grown out.
Even if a few extensions are still visible, there may not be enough usable work remaining for a fill.
How Often Should You Schedule Lash Fills?
Many clients schedule lash fills approximately every two to three weeks.
However, the ideal schedule depends on your natural lash cycle, retention, preferred fullness, and home care routine. Clients who prefer a consistently full appearance may schedule appointments more frequently, while clients who enjoy a softer look may wait slightly longer.
It is usually better to schedule maintenance before the set becomes very sparse. Waiting until only a small number of extensions remain may mean the appointment must be changed from a fill to a full set.
Regular maintenance also allows the lash artist to remove grown-out extensions before they twist, droop, or become uncomfortable.
How to Help Your Lash Set Stay Fill-Ready
Proper aftercare can help improve retention and keep the lashes clean enough for a maintenance appointment.
Clean your lashes regularly
Eyelash extensions should be cleaned with an extension-safe lash cleanser. Regular cleansing removes oil, makeup, dust, and other buildup from the lash line.
Clean lashes are not only important for appearance. They also help the lash artist work more efficiently during the next appointment.
Avoid oil-based products around the eyes
Some oil-based makeup removers, creams, and skincare products may weaken the adhesive bonds. Check the ingredients of products used near the lash line and avoid applying heavy oils directly to the extensions.
Do not rub or pull the extensions
Rubbing, pulling, or picking at the lashes may remove extensions prematurely and can place unnecessary stress on the natural lashes.
If an extension feels uncomfortable, do not pull it out at home. Contact the salon so the area can be evaluated safely.
Avoid mascara
Mascara is generally not recommended on eyelash extensions. It can create buildup, make cleansing more difficult, and interfere with future maintenance.
Brush the lashes gently
Use a clean lash brush to keep the extensions aligned. Brush gently and avoid forcing the brush through tangled or wet lashes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a fill after four weeks?
Possibly, but it depends on how many extensions remain and their condition. After four weeks, many clients may need a new full set rather than a standard fill.
The lash artist will need to evaluate whether enough usable extensions remain to restore the set evenly.
How many lashes must remain for a fill?
There is no single percentage that works for every client. The remaining extensions must be reasonably clean, evenly distributed, and safely attached.
A set with a few extensions in one area and large gaps elsewhere may require a full set even if some extensions are still present.
Can you fill lashes done by another artist?
ICON Beauty Clinic generally does not perform fills over eyelash extensions applied by another salon. A removal and new full set may be recommended to ensure the application is consistent and the natural lashes can be properly assessed.
Can I change from Classic to Volume during a fill?
Minor changes may be possible, but a major style change often requires a new full set. The best option depends on the current lash set and the desired level of fullness.
What happens if I wore mascara?
Mascara may leave residue on the extensions and around the adhesive bonds. If the lashes cannot be cleaned sufficiently or the set is heavily coated, removal and a new full set may be necessary.
Should I arrive with clean lashes?
Yes. Arrive without mascara, eyeliner, eye makeup, or oily products around the eyes. Clean lashes allow more appointment time to be spent applying extensions instead of removing makeup and buildup.
